Thorncombe Sports Club - Badge

In 1968, Commander W.J. Eyre R.N. (Rtd.) offered a parcel of land which might be developed as a sports field for the recreational pursuits of the inhabitants of Thorncombe.

In 1970, the existing sports factions in the village amalgamated to form the Thorncombe Sports Club.

What's in a Badge ?

Probably, the most significant event in the history of Thorncombe was the founding of the Abbey at Forde in 1132.  The period of monastic influence from 1132 until 1539 is symbolised by the lamb, often referred to by Christians as the “Lamb of God”.  The Holy Lamb can be found in many church carvings, as well as in heraldry.  It is always drawn passant (walking) with a flag of St. George on a cross staff over its right shoulder.  A halo is drawn round its head.
The last Abbot of Forde, Abbot Chard, was a suffragan bishop to the Bishop of Exeter from 1508 and was given the Living of Thorncombe in 1529, ten years before he left the Abbey at the Dissolution of the Monastaries by Henry VIII in 1539.  From that time, successive Patrons of the Living have been domiciled at Sadborrow.
The Patronage is represented by the golden keys of St. Peter, denoting guardianship, and the silver ecclesiastical cross denoting the Christian Living.  Thus it is that the Patron has control over the appointment of incumbents to the parish of Thorncombe
In 1968, the then patron of the living, Commander W.J. Eyre R.N. (Rtd.) offered a parcel of land which might be developed as a sports field for the recreational pursuits of the inhabitants of Thorncombe.  In 1970, the existing sports factions in the village amalgamated to form the Thorncombe Sports Club.  This organisation is symbolised by the flaming torch of Olympus, traditionally associated with athletic activities, on a green background representing the green sward.
